International Catering Waste

Sailing directly from a country outside the european union to lagos?

If the last leg of your journey to Marina de Lagos started in a country outside the European Union, you must read this information and follow the procedure.

To prevent the introduction of animal diseases in Europe, such as foot-and-mouth disease or swine fever, the European authorities have classified the international catering waste from vessels traveling from outside the EU as high-risk category 1 animal by-product, subject to compulsory elimination.

International catering waste (ICW) is defined as animal by-products food waste, and any other material that it is mixed with (including disposable cutlery, plates, etc.) that comes from international transport.

ICW must be controlled as it presents a risk to animal health if it were to get into the animal food chain. Animal by-products not intended for human consumption are a potential source of risk to public and animal health.

International catering waste generated on board must comply with the dispositions of Regulation (EC) 1069/2009.

European Union countries: Austria, Estonia, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria,  France, Lithuania, Slovakia, Croatia, Germany, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark,  Ireland, Poland

Special cases also classified as outside the European Union:

  • Gibraltar, Ceuta and Melilla (special territories of some member-states)
  • Norway and Iceland (part of the Schengen area, but not part of the European Union)
