Environment and Sustainability
Insect hotel / shelter
The insects’ hotels that can now be found in our gardens were built as part of a project for the class Trabalhos de Campo II, within the bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences at Universidade Aberta, by student Joana Sousa. This initiative is part of a project aimed at promoting and managing biodiversity in the gardens of the Marina de Lagos.
Insect hotels are structures that serve as shelter and nesting sites for different beneficial insect species, such as butterflies, solitary bees, ladybugs, lacewings, among others. These insects contribute to the pollination of plant species, help control pests, and play an important role in keeping ecosystems balanced.

Reusing Materials to Support Nature
Please do not touch the structure or disturb the insects.
Each shelter was carefully built, making extensive use of natural materials such as reeds and logs, which mimic natural cavities and refuges usually found in forests but often absent in urban gardens. By reusing wooden boxes, their life cycle was extended and material waste reduced, which is in line with the sustainability goals of the project.
With these shelters, the aim is not only to increase the diversity of insects present in the gardens of the Marina de Lagos de Lagos, but also to raise awareness among visitors about the importance of biodiversity in urban environments.
